Embossable Word Search (EWS) FAQ
Getting Started
- What is the Embossable Word Search app?
The Embossable Word Search app is a free web-based tool from APH that allows educators to create and download word search puzzles formatted for braille embossing. Users can select from pre-made puzzles or create their own using custom word lists. No specialized technical experience is required.
- Who is this app designed for?
This app is designed for Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), classroom teachers, and paraeducators who support braille-reading students in K–12 settings. It may be used by anyone creating tactile word search activities for braille readers.
- Do I need to install anything to use the app?
No. The app runs entirely in a web browser and does not require installation. A Windows computer is recommended to align with common braille embossing workflows. An internet connection is required to generate puzzles; downloaded files may be used offline.
- Is the app free to use?
Yes. The Embossable Word Search app is available at no cost. There are no subscriptions, accounts, or usage fees.
- What web browsers work best with the app?
The app is designed for modern web browsers on Windows. Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are recommended for the most consistent performance.
Creating and Customizing Puzzles
- How do I create a puzzle from my own word list?
Select the Create Puzzle option. Enter a title, then configure the Puzzle Size and Orientation settings. Add each word in the fields provided. The app will validate the entries and generate a formatted braille word search.
- Can I choose the difficulty level of a puzzle?
Yes. Difficulty is determined by word complexity and may be set to Easy, Medium, or Hard.
- What grid sizes are available?
The app offers 10x10, 18x10, 18x12, and 18x18 grid sizes. The 10x10 grid is well suited for early learners or those new to word search activities. The 18x10 grid is designed for use with the Monarch multiline braille display; set the device to display ten lines of text and open the BRF file using the KeyBRF application. Larger grid sizes (18x12 and 18x18) are appropriate for more advanced students and for puzzles that include longer words.
- What word orientations can I choose from?
All puzzles include horizontal words. Additional orientations, vertical, diagonal, and reverse, may be selected using the available options. For new users, horizontal-only puzzles are recommended.
- Can I browse and use pre-made puzzles?
Yes. The app includes a library of pre-made puzzles organized by category, such as Animals, Science, Holidays, and Vocabulary. Puzzles can be searched, filtered, and previewed before use.
Answer Keys
- Does the app generate an answer key automatically?
Yes. Each puzzle includes a corresponding answer key that lists all words along with their starting coordinates in the grid.
- How do I access the answer key?
The answer key is provided separately from the puzzle and can be accessed through a clearly labeled option.
- Can I download or emboss the answer key?
Yes. The answer key is available for download in BRF format and is clearly labeled with the puzzle title and identified as an “Answer Key.”
Downloading and File Formats
- What file formats can I download?
Puzzles and answer keys are available for download in BRF (Braille Ready Format). This format is compatible with braille embossing workflows and supported braille devices.
- Can I preview the puzzle before downloading?
Yes. A preview is available so you can review the layout and content prior to downloading.
Saved Work and Storage
- Will the app remember my settings or saved puzzles between visits?
Yes. The app uses local storage within your browser to save user-created puzzles and selected preferences on your device.
- What happens if I update my saved puzzles or preferences?
Updates are saved automatically and will be available the next time you access the app using the same device and browser.
- Can I clear my saved puzzles or preferences?
Yes. Clearing your browser’s local storage will remove saved puzzles and reset preferences for the app on that device.
Embossing and File Use
- Does the app work directly with embossers or braille displays?
No. The app does not connect directly to embossers or braille displays. It generates downloadable BRF files that can be used within your existing workflow.
These files may be sent to an embosser, such as the PixBlaster, or opened on a compatible braille display, such as the Monarch.
- How do I use the downloaded file for embossing or display?
After downloading the BRF file, use your standard process to send the file to an embosser or open it on a compatible braille display.
- Can I use this app on a phone or tablet?
The app is designed for use on Windows desktop or laptop computers. While some features may function on mobile devices, a Windows computer is recommended for optimal performance and compatibility.
